Blogging Questions and a Few Introductions {a blog hop}

This is the post where I take part in my first blog hop. I was invited by Alia Joy of Narrow Paths to Higher Places. June felt like a good time to take the blog speed down a notch and focus not so much on the words I pray for but the friends I’ve made. This is the post where I answer the blogging questions and make a few introductions.

Blog hops scared me – I turned this one down a few months ago because of timing and  fear of all the platform building hoopla. When asked I’d just written this. I’d caught myself trying to be everywhere just for the sake of being in the mix. It didn’t feel authentic and the spirit check was necessary.  Still, I don’t want to shy away from the work of promoting myself.  I want to walk in humility but I’m learning to give myself permission to lovingly put work into building a community, to share my life and words and tell you that I’m doing it – as long as I stay mindful of Him.

Give Me Grace : Resurrection

If we humans die, will we live again? That’s my question. All through these difficult days I keep hoping, waiting for the final change—for resurrection! Homesick with longing for the creature you made, you’ll call—and I’ll answer! You’ll watch over every step I take, but you won’t keep track of my missteps. My sins will be stuffed in a sack and thrown into the sea—sunk in deep ocean. (Job 14:1-17 MSG)

Give Me Grace : Bow Down

I talked with a friend this week. An online friend that’s made the miraculous leap from cyberspace to my real life world. We met each other way too late in the day. Each of us spent. For her, a long day of travel and for me, the uptown ,downtown crosstown maze that makes my girls figure skating camp possible this summer. With early morning rises ahead of us we made the time any way. Breaking bread with a whimsical but reverent “yeah God”, we got down to the business of sharing our stories. Five Minute Friday : Release

Release

In the online world we all have dreams. Large or small, we hold in our hearts a vision or reason why we’re here. Maybe it’s an online journal for family and friends, a sacred space for heart heavy words – helping us process our lives and encourage others. Maybe we’re taking steps towards a God whispered dream…we pray to write, to speak…to travel.

I’ve met so many of you in this space and I identify with the passion in your words. I want you to know the day you hit publish, on your very first post…you set yourself free. It was your day of release.

Maybe your story was shut up in shame. Or you were too timid to speak. The sound of your voice… holding you back in a world that would have you believe you aren’t… enough. Maybe you thought using your voice vain and hid behind the scenes. You sat in the back when God called you out. And now living in the tension of that just won’t do. You can’t deny your calling. You’ve been released. And I want to thank you, because your release, encourages mine.  ~ read more ~

The Post I Didn’t Write…on Father’s Day

my free fall into the promise of Father’s Day

For over twenty years Father’s Day has been about the children in my life. I can’t remember when I last experienced Father’s Day… as a daughter. I don’t know if I ever have.

Because of work, my father spent his life on the road. He divided his down time between the families of the children he sired. I don’t think this ever went over well with my mother. She came to New York with friends straight out of high school and married my father after being here only 3 weeks. By the time my siblings and I were old enough to know the deal…well the jig was up. We only brought presents for him if we knew he’d be with us on a particular holiday. Father’s Day wasn’t a holiday in our home.

A chill comes over me as I write that. Whatever it is around my heart over this, is heavy and it hurts. It feels known and unknown. Finding the words is hard. But part of a holy work I have to do. Whatever it is, is bitter and bolted shut. The taste of blood reminds me I’ve bitten my tongue…for too long.  ~ read more ~

It is good to give thanks and praise to the Lord because of who He is and what He has done – Psalm 92:1

Heavy rain poured in the city that morning. From my sweet spot on the terrace, I stood in the doorway and listened. The God cord of my heart had been pulled. It tugged taut and tense forcing my attention. Gently winding it’s twisted strands around me – I woke up in the security and comfort of a smile. I was in a good mood.  ~ read more ~

I didn’t think the studio could hold my sadness. Tired oak floors, a second step that creaked as you made your way to the studio, splintered wood-paneled walls – everything about the place was old. And it was too old to hold my disappointment, too small to hold this colossal failure. I didn’t get the part after all.  ~ read more ~

what’s next for Bill Franklin? He doesn’t seem restless

Restless. I woke up to the sound of the littlest lovelies immersed in free play. Around my head. Apparently there was a need for more boys in the kingdom they’d created. Who would get out of bed to retrieve Bill Franklin, Ade’s plush toy mouse?

I didn’t want to know and feigning sleep, turned over. But I was up and had been for over an hour. Restless, I’d already tapped out the events for the day on my mental activity planner. I’d thought as far as dinner. That’s rare.  ~ read more ~

Nothing

The One who died for us—who was raised to life for us!—is in the presence of God at this very moment sticking up for us. Do you think anyone is going to be able to drive a wedge between us and Christ’s love for us? There is no way! Not trouble, not hard times, not hatred, not hunger, not homelessness, not bullying threats, not backstabbing, not even the worst sins listed in scripture

I’m absolutely convinced that nothing—nothing living or dead, angelic or demonic, today or tomorrow, high or low, thinkable or unthinkable—absolutely nothing can get between us and God’s love because of the way that Jesus our Master has embraced us.- taken from Romans 8:31-39 The Message

I gave my life to the Lord as an adult. At 22, let’s just say I had developed a few unsavory habits. Like most new believers I struggled with sin…putting off the old man, so to speak. The church I attended then held altar calls at the end of every service – for people committing their lives to God for the first of fiftieth time as well as people like me…people who were already sold out on Jesus…just trying to get it right.  ~ read more ~

Five Minute Friday : Hands

When the last few weeks of the homeschooling grind get tough we go outside. A break from our beloved kitchen table is sometimes, just the thing we need. So on Tuesday we spread our blanket in Central Park. We ate veggie pasta, chased butterflies, Ila finished a little math. Just before 3pm, I checked in with my teen to let him know where we were. He’d meet us later.

The area we entered at 106th Street was definitely a mellow spot. A family watched their toddler nap in a stroller, a young couple spooned together next to a pile of backpacks. A collective “chill out” sign might have hung from a tree.

It was that kind of day. That kind of spot, when a school group and 2 teachers joined us. It’s a public park, for the enjoyment of all, but that enjoyment is only assured when we all follow the unspoken code. You arrive, check out the lay of the land…it’s mood.
